Multi-Cloud Vs. Hybrid Cloud

If you are like most of the organizations, you might not be satisfied by solely using private-cloud as a part of an efficient cloud strategy. Instead, you are looking for a cost-effective and better-performing solution. It’s good to switch to public-cloud but not only for the sake of it. You need to understand that this shift is for your organizations’ future vision. Because innovation is the key factor to embrace the potential of the cloud. So, you need to understand what fundamental changes will take place if you shift your strategy towards public-cloud.

Know the difference

The difference between multi-cloud and hybrid cloud is much more than just semantic.

Hybrid cloud is a mix of both public cloud and private cloud. It means you can make a fruitful investment in on-premise solutions while using public-cloud for your new workloads, building and testing new applications. The key word is “private cloud”. So even if you take multiple public-cloud in practice but with a mix of on-premises infrastructure, you are on hybrid-cloud.

Multi-cloud differs by simply not putting public cloud in picture. When you use multiple public-cloud to get the best resources provided by different cloud providers like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform (GCP) etc. In other words, if you particularly want to use multiple public-cloud as per your requirements, you are looking at a multi-cloud.

Multi-cloud over Hybrid cloud or the other way around

When you do not want to host complicated infrastructure components on your own. It left you with the only option of using public-cloud. Don’t worry you are not at any disadvantage. Instead, you have the power to curate a unique, cost-efficient cloud strategy. You can analyze and compare the various benefits provided by cloud providers. Then mix and match to fit in your requirement. In this scenario, you can definitely opt for multi-cloud.

On the other hand, if you already have hosted servers on-premises but looking to bring more value to your cloud. You can bring that value by using cloud on-the-go, building applications on off-premises hosted servers. This gives you an edge to test and run new applications without hindering your on-premises functions. It gives you the experience of both worlds, public and private cloud, in the form of hybrid-cloud.

So, the incorporating multi-cloud or hybrid cloud depends entirely on your “unique” cloud environment.

The key is to not multiply your efforts whether you are on multi-cloud or hybrid cloud environment. Enterprises have more concerns regarding public cloud than private cloud. But it is a completely different scenario nowadays. In fact, you are now able to monitor and optimize your public cloud resources through intelligent cloud management platform. The SaaS platforms provide you granular visibility, helps you optimize your cloud and lets you govern your cloud in the most efficient manner.
